Michael Louis Alvarez (Squirrel) age 47, Mayor of Indian Trail, passed into the arms of his Savior on January 19, 2022 peacefully at his home while surrounded by his loving friends and family. Michael was born Thursday, August 21, 1969 in Brooklyn, NY to Anthony "Moe" Modesto and Seraphine (DePoalis) Alvarez. Michael was married to Jill (Roberts) Alvarez.
Michael worked briefly for Homeland Security and was a successful real estate broker prior to being diagnosed with cancer in 2008. Michael ran for mayor because he wanted to make a difference and leave a positive impact on his community. During his decade-spanning service, he made helping others his priority; Michael could easily be reached via phone call, email, or Facebook and would work to do what he could to solve problems and advocate for his neighbors. Beyond his mayoral duties, he was a major supporter of local businesses, the Union County Sheriff's Office, the VFW, the American Legion, Boy Scouts, and many other local groups. He was on the Board of the Artists Music Guild, of which he was very passionate, on which he helped to bring entertainment legends to Union County and place them into the classrooms of Title 1 schools. He also started the Mayor's Tree Education Initiative, which brought lessons about environmental education to local elementary students. He was also more than happy to talk with students about the duties of being a mayor and what it meant to serve in local government.
Michael is predeceased by his father Anthony Modesto Alvarez. Left to cherish his memory are his mother Seraphine Alvarez, his wife Jill Alvarez, his daughters Ashley and Vinyl Alvarez, his son Alex Alvarez, his brothers Ronald Alvarez and his wife Towanna and Ricky Guglielmo and his wife Tracy, his sisters Gloria Penley and Julie Daniels and her husband Burl, as well as many nieces and nephews.
