James Martin Obituary

James (Jim) Francis Martin, 73, of Matthews, North Carolina died Thursday, December 28 - one month after being diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.  In July, he celebrated his 45th wedding anniversary with his beloved wife, Diana. Together they raised five children: Katie Stewart (Jeff), the late Ben Martin (Kate), Mary Clarin (Dan), Allie Vining (Drew), and Matt Martin (Nicole).

Born in Greenville, Illinois to the late Everett and Mary Helen Martin. He was the third oldest of seven siblings: the late Art Martin (Janine) the late Larry Martin (Audrey), Tony Martin (Mary Joseph), Molly Martin (Steve), John Martin (Charlotte), and Mary Helen Anderson.

Jim graduated from St. Procopius College and then went on to receive his MBA from Northwestern University. Jim's storied career in Human Resources included stops at PepsiCo, Harcourt Brace & Company, Coors Brewing Company, TWA, RehabCare, and Daikin Applied Americas, among others. Jim's no-nonsense style endeared him to many (and maybe not so much others) but he excelled in labor relations, acquisition integration, and recruiting.  He was known as a developer of leaders and his ability to get things done led to the opportunities he enjoyed later in his career - ultimately consulting and working for many people who had previously worked for him.

One of Jim's many famous one-liners was "90% of life is just showing up" and he lived that out in the ways that he loved and supported his siblings, in-laws, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was a constant presence on the sidelines of any and every youth sporting event (and even adult hockey games) on the calendar.  He also had a penchant for hosting large family gatherings and dinners at Mike Shannon’s and Surf and Sirloin.

Jim was an avid reader of historical non-fiction, collecting many hundreds of books throughout his life. His collection spanned mostly American history but as a lifelong learner, Jim was always happy to have his nose in a book.

His legacy will live on in his 12 grandchildren: Brianna, Fiona, and Leah Stewart, Jackson and Maddie Martin, Lucy, Henry, and Charlie Clarin, Louisa, Oliver, and Anderson Vining, and Ruby Martin.

Friends and family of Jim are invited to attend a visitation at Schrader Funeral Home, (14960 Manchester Road, Ballwin, MO 63011) on Friday, January 5 from 4-7 PM. A Catholic mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Parish, (567 Saint Joseph Lane, Manchester, MO 63021), on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at 10 AM. Afterwards, everyone is invited to enjoy a luncheon at Surf and Sirloin (13090 Manchester Road, Des Peres, MO 63131).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to The Scleroderma Foundation of Greater Chicago in Jim Martin's name. Jim's daughter, Mary, suffers from this autoimmune disease.
