Claude Oxley Obituary

Mr. Claude Thomas "Tom" Oxley, 89, of Indian Trail passed away Sunday, November 10, 2019 in the Levine and Dickson Hospice House of Huntersville. He was born June 2, 1930 in Powellton, West Virginia to Wyatt v Oxley, Sr and Mattie Waterworth. On January 4, 1953 he married his wife Nancy Ella Hiott. 

Tom served in the United Sates Marines and carried the rank of Sergeant; he also was a member of the Exclusive Fraternity of Honor - "The Chosin Few"; he also was a member of the James B Crumb Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2423 of Indian Trail. His battles included July 7, 1948-February 6, 1950 Guam, M.I.; September 1, 1950- September 11, 1951 Korean Area: Assault and Seizure of Inchon September 16, 1950; Capture and securing of Seoul September 17, 1950-October 7, 1950; Wonsan-Hungnam-Chosin Campaign, Northern Korea, October 28, 1950-December 13, 1950; Operation against enemy forces in south and central Korea December 16, 1950-September 10, 1951. He was honorably discharged March 23, 1952.

Mr. Oxley previously served as a deacon in several Baptist churches in Charleston and lastly at the Clearview Baptist Church in Charleston, SC before leaving the area. Before his retirement, he served as a Quality Control Auditor for the Charleston Naval Shipyard. 

Mr. Oxley was preceded in death by his parents; his son Claude Thomas Oxley, Jr; and siblings June Williams, Reba Elkins, Juanita Harrah, Louise King and Wyatt Oxley, Jr. 

Left to cherish his memory, his beloved wife Nancy, daughter Lynn Sharp and husband John of Indian Trail; Granddaughter Emily Grace Matthews and Husband Aaron of Marshville; brothers Donald Oxley (Roberta) and Phil Oxley (Carol); sisters Shirley Ruble and Betty Joe Sturgill; along with many nieces and nephews. 

Mr. Oxley will be laid to rest in the Fort Jackson National Cemetery with a private service.
