Alfred Lewis Obituary

Alfred M. Lewis Jr. age 76, was born May 9, 1946 in Charlotte, North Carolina and passed away peacefully on March 14, 2023 at Atrium Health CMC Main while surrounded by his loving family.

"Al" as he was affectionately known to everyone was an individual who had always found structure to be his best friend. In 1963, he graduated from Garinger High School and attended Pfeiffer University. As a young man out of school he began his professional career and soon found himself in the business sector and owning three different companies while simultaneously achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air National Guard.. As successful as he was and as much as he loved business, he loved his Lord even more. It was during that revelation that Al realized that he wanted to devote himself into the ministry so that he could lead as many to Christ as possible. Al stayed in the Word and grew as a minister. He loved to write and inspire people and devoted his life to serving inmates and equipping with them the life skills necessary to succeed as upstanding members of society upon release. Over the span of 50 years, he worked for Chuck Colson’s Prison Fellowship, served as the chaplain of the Union County Jail, founded and led of Safer Communities Ministry, and served as a mentor and advisor to Emerge Prison Ministries.. His fervent belief was that you had to do everything decently and in order. He was the founder and leader of Safer Communities Ministry to which he devoted so much of himself. When people speak of Al Lewis they all agree that he was a man that was not only passionate about God, but lived Him as well.

Al is predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Mary Lewis and his brother, Donald Lewis. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of forty-one years Linda Lewis, his son, Matthew Lewis and his wife Kirstin, his two brothers, Timmy Norkett and his wife Chris, David Norkett and his wife Debbie. He also leaves behind two grandsons to whom he adored, Weston and Conner Lewis.
