Alfred J Jean Jr, age 94 passed away peacefully, Sunday, July 11, 2021 at Langdon Place in Exeter, NH, surrounded by his family.

Al was born Monday, May 16, 1927 in Lawrence, MA to Alfred J  Sr and Cora (Pothier) Jean. He graduated from Amesbury High School in June of 1944 and was soon drafted into the US Army and served in Germany immediately after the war in Europe ended. Al was married to his loving wife of 69 years, Dorothy Turgeon, on June 29, 1952 at St Joseph Church in Amesbury. 

In 1958 Al was accepted into the apprentice pipe fitter program at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Me where  he worked until his retirement in 1987.

Al was the first civilian in US Naval Shipyard history to be appointed to be Nuclear Type Desk Officer at PNS, a position previously only held by an active duty naval officer. Upon his retirement he became the first parish manager at St Joseph Church, serving in that capacity for several years. Following that he found time to spend several years working part time at Bartley Machine Co. in Amesbury. He was also a charter member of St Joseph’s Men’s Schola which eventually became a mixed choir that he and Dottie both sang in faithfully for over 3 decades. Al was a member of the Amesbury Lions Club for many years, was a member of Amesbury Council  250 Knights of Columbus and was a very active member of St Joseph which became Holy Family Parish Council for many years. Al recently was formally recognized by Beacon Hospice on Memorial Day 2021 for his service to his nation in the US Army during World War II and also for his work for three decades at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Al was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who enjoyed watching his beloved Boston sports teams and was an avid golfer.

Al was predeceased by his mother and father, his sister Jacqueline Durant, his brother Ronald Jean and an infant grandson Shawn Michael Jean.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Dorothy, his son Michael Jean and his wife Dianne, his devoted daughter Marianne Mooers and her husband Paul, his grandchildren Ryan Mooers and his wife Catherine, Alison Bell and her husband Pat, Michaella Jean, Kyle Mooers and partner Emily Dowling and Caitlin Kennedy and her husband Ryan, his great grandchildren Alivia Jean, Aria and Rowan Bell, Logan and Claire Mooers, Connor Michael Kennedy and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 from 6 PM to 8PM at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, July 15, 2021 at 10 AM at St Joseph Church of the Holy Family Parish, 2 School Street, Amesbury, followed by interment at St Joseph Cemetery, Haverhill Road, Amesbury.
