Mr. James Boice Crump, 94, of Hemby Bridge, passed away December 7, 2018 at his residence. He was born July 9, 1924 in Mecklenburg County to Mack Boice Crump and Rosa Norkett Crump. He was a member of VFW Post 2423 of Indian Trail; American Legion, Sam Keziah, Post 535 in Unionville; Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 634; and The French Legion of Honor. As a WWII Veteran he received the following medals: 2 Bronze Stars, 3 Purple Hearts, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, American Defense Service Medal, and Combat Infantry Badge.
Mr. Crump was well known in Union County for his cheerful demeanor and love for his community. His hobbies included gardening, "tinkering" on automobiles and lawnmowers. He enjoyed building things, and was a Champion at horseshoes. Also he enjoyed reading and studying the Bible, studying history, both World and Ancient, and watching old movies. Mr. Crump loved nature, being outdoors with an incredible knowledge of stars, planets and galaxies.
Left to Cherish his memory are his wife, Martha Gilreath Crump of 72 years; His daughters Louise and Raymond Griffin, Margaret and Rick Stancill, Doris and Nick Rochester, Cheryl and Benny Helms, Pat and Mark Wooten, Barbara and Wendell Johnson, and Nancy and Tommy Webber. He has 23 Grandchildren, 39 Great Grandchildren and 8 Great-Great Grandchildren. Mr. Crump was preceded in death by his parents Mack and Rosa Crump; brother Harley B. Crump; Sister Edna Crump Vea; Grandson James Harold Capps; and Great Granddaughter Cecily Johnson Sherbo.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 11:00 am Thursday, December 13, 2018 in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Indian Trail; speakers will include Dr. Mike Whitson, Dr. Chris Baucom and Chaplain Bill Griffin. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens. Public Visitation will be 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm Wednesday in the Good Shepherd Chapel of Life and Legacy Funerals and Cremations, 6525 Old Monroe Rd, Indian Trail.
